Brief Guide to Statutory Reviews

A new guide, published by the VKPP, provides additional information on various types of safeguarding reviews, where policing often plays a central role.

Statutory reviews are generally carried out following the death or serious harm of an individual, in cases that meet the criteria for review as outlined in relevant legislation.

These reviews do not have the authority to determine civil or criminal liability. Instead, their focus is on establishing factual findings and offering recommendations to improve practices aimed at safeguarding vulnerable individuals.

'A Brief Guide to Statutory Reviews' is primarily intended for those involved in writing or commissioning reviews, but it is also valuable for anyone seeking further information about statutory reviews.

The purpose of this document is to offer insights on:

  • The types of statutory reviews related to vulnerability
  • The governance structure and key agencies involved
  • Guidance on conducting and writing reviews
  • Information on where review repositories, if available, can be accessed.

This publication is particularly relevant to those in public protection and safeguarding roles.
